DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2022 Surjit Singh Lecture. \nThis year’s speaker will be Dr. Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra\, Alice Drysdale Sheffield Professor of History and Director\, Institute for Historical Studies at the University of Texas\, Austin. \nTitle: “The Virgin Mary as Warrior: Marian models of women’s religious experience in colonial Latin America.” \nDescription: The historiography of women’s piety in Latin America usually focuses on discrimination and dominant colonial ideologies of religious passivity. Yet a study of Mariology suggests that Hebrew Bible models of Mary were not only numerous (Song of Songs\, Book of Wisdom\, Ruth\, Judith\, Yael) but deeply contradictory\, creating enough room for women to gain and wield immense religious power. DESCRIPTION:Join Drs. Kathryn Barush and Mahjabeen Dhala in this GTUx Live conversation about the power of pilgrimage. \nDr. Barush will discuss her work with The Berkeley Art and Interreligious Pilgrimage Project\, which is an invitation to create and experience art-infused pilgrimages in the Bay Area and beyond. It seeks to link sacred landscapes the world over to neighborhoods\, gardens\, and backyards as a way to connect with each other and our ancestors and as a catalyst for spiritual healing and even physical recovery. Her talk will explore the artworks and built environments that inspired the project and some future directions for growth. \nDr. Dhala’s talk will explore how Islamic practice is much informed by the paradigm of a spiritual journey that begins from and ends with a return to the Divine. Q4:100 alludes to the experiences of a pilgrim as someone who leaves home as a migrant towards God: prepared to face challenges\, having fallen in love with her destination.
